Cousiño Macul

Cousiño Macul is the only family owned winery in Chile that continues to be maintained by the family dating back to when they opened their doors in 1856. All the wines are grown, vinted, and bottled on the premises. During my tour of Cousiño Macul, I was allowed to bicycle through the 750 acres estate, making for a unique experience. The mountains on the horizon while the wind breezed through my hair as I learned about the different types of vines and the wine they produced. My tour guide, Antonia, proved quite knowledgeable and provided great company throughout my private tour. After my tour of the premises, I even had the divine pleasure to indulge in four different wines.

Sauvignon Gris 2016
Isidora Goyenechea married into the Cousiño family in 1855. Isidora served as the driving force behind Cousino Macul producing Sauvignon Gris. The wine, which is clear with delicate aromas of fresh pineapples and ripe peaches, is a delight to the palate. When I started collecting wines in 2011, I did not have a favorite. When people inquired about my collection, or my many trips to different vineyards, I would say that I was in search of a favorite wine. Now, having traveled 5,164 miles to Santiago, I am finally able to say my FAVORITE wine is Cousino Macul Sauvignon Gris 2016.

Antiguas Reservas Chardonnay 2016
Cousiño-Macul has offered this particular reserve since 1969. Their chardonnay is full of intense flavors yet delicate on the palate. The aroma provides a scent of vanilla while you taste bold flavors of fruits.

Antiguas Reservas Merlot 2015
Cousiño-Macul’s merlot requires a twenty day process of fermentative maceration followed by 10 to 12 months of maturing in French oak. This process results in the bold, yet dry, taste of blueberries and mulberries.
Antiguas Reservas Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Since the year 1927, the intense aromas have remained the same. With a swirl of your glass you will delicately smell fresh herbs while your palate detects the taste of ripe plums and blackberries.

If you find yourself in Santiago, Cousiño Macul is a world class experience that should not be missed. Don’t forget to ask for Antonia!
